(More customer reviews)We purchased these sunglasses for our two-year old daughter prior to a beach vacation. I had seen children's sunglasses before but had not focused on them much as I didn't think that she could keep them on last summer at ~18 months, so she wore a wide brim hat. At that time I bought a pair of very inexpensive sunglasses that fit with adjustable elasticized straps; these were ok for minimal use but slipped and later on the (inexpensive) lenses popped out!
Based on this experience, I wanted to avoid any lense pop-outs, and also find shades that our child could put on -- and that would stay on -- with minimal parental intervention (no straps for me to adjust, etc.). The Julbo sunglasses are "dummy proof" - there is no up/down, so your child can put them on and they'll be the "right way" no matter what. The glasses have no hinges and basically wrap around the wearer's head (but not in an uncomfortable way - we'd hear about it otherwise). These sunglasses are also quite durable: they flex quite a bit (my daughter has made them almost flat a few times, ugh), they withstand frequent dropping, and then mirror lenses do not pop out and do not scratch.
Our daughter LOVES these glasses. She has worn them nearly daily now since our vacation in early March. When we first got them in the dreary dead of winter, she seemed to wonder why she needed them, but quickly became a fan in the sun on vacation. Now that we're home, a month and half later she still asks for them each time we out if she can't find them. She's quick to tell us if something isn't right (too hot, itchy, etc.) and we have never received any complaints about these glasses.
We receive positive comments on the glasses from strangers almost each time we go out - people seem to like the "look."
I thought the strap would be a good thing, but we don't actually use it. This could be due to my daughter's hair (frequently in two pony tails). We don't really need the strap, come to find out.
Pros: VERY durable, child can put on by him/her self, glasses stay on, lots of colors (we got the brown/blue combo, which may not sound girly, but looks good with brown hair)
Cons: Couldn't find these in a store to try on so took a leap of faith and bought on Amazon (would never do this for my own sunglasses!)
Neutral: Price seemed high at time of purchase (and frankly I was worried that I would regret my purchase) but given the use and abuse they have received (near daily wear), and durability, I think the price is worth it as we would have replaced regular hinged glasses several times by now or would have been fussing with the Velcro adjustable-strap kind.
We will look at Julbo children's glasses when our daughter outgrows her current pair. Would definitely recommend to parents who want their toddlers to wear sunglasses and who want the child to "own" the wearing experience.
