Costa Del Mar Fathom 400 Sunglasses Review

(More customer reviews)I own several pairs of Costa Del Mar Sunglasses and I couldn't be happier with any of them. Each pair has its individual purpose.....at least that's how I justify buying multiple pairs (because I love them so much). I have owned Oakleys, Ray Bans, and Maui Jims in the past and Costas reign supreme. The Fathom Sunglasses with the Mirror Lenses are very comfortable on my face and perform exceptionally well in the harsh maritime environment where I work. While I do love the style of these glasses, I must admit that the Costas are not quite as "stylish" as the Maui Jims; however, when it comes to performance - especially on the water - Costa Del Mar is untouchable. The Blue Mirror Lenses do a phenomenal job at filtering the yellow light that kills a person's ability to see on/through the water. Also, glare from the sun is virtually eliminated with these sunglasses. I have read a number of negative reviews stating that these sunglasses fall apart fairly easily and that the warranty process is extremely tedious to boot. I have owned my sunglasses for a while now and I have not had any issues with them whatsoever. I do, however, take the time to properly care for them which I am sure keeps them in good condition. I do have a friend that sent in his 4-year-old pair of Costa Blackfins for repair. He admitted to beating them up quite a bit, but they were still in decent condition. For a small, $11 processing fee, they did a complete makeover on his sunglasses and they came back virtually brand new. I have been more than happy with my Costa Del Mar experience. I don't think it's a coincidence that just about everyone who works on the water, especially in sunny Florida, trusts their eyes to a pair of Costas. They truly are the best sunglasses I've ever owned....I can't wait to buy my next pair!!

The Shooter is one of the most functional sport glasses on the market. The frame fits, and blocks wind, almost like a goggle with its vented, one-piece foam brow/nose pad and side flares. Going beyond traditional UV protection, supravision lenses block out short-wave blue components of visible light up to 400nm, making them a must-have for spring snow conditions, when a goggle is too warm, but the snow is too fast for regular sunglasses. The black transparent frame comes with the UVEX supravision smoke lens, which is great for sunny days, but not so dark that it hampers contrast. When I opened the package I just felt like the glasses were not worth $70.00. The frames are plastic, not metal. The lenses fell out of the frame the second time I wore them. And it has happened several times since. I like the looks of the glasses however the quality is suspect. You do get a nice case with the glasses. I would expect to pay around $30-40 for these glasses.

(I nearly freaked when I saw a sales clerk for another store use her shirt to wipe dust of a pair of glasses) My glasses came in PERFECT condition. They didn't have any microscratches on the lenses (from someone's t-shirt). I am also pleased with the quality of polarization. I also have a pair of $300 Maui Jim's and can't tell a difference in polarization. I've already taken my Costas on the lake and found them boat worthy. I strongly recommend these glasses and hope you enjoy them as I do.

However after I've got these glasses they really improve your vision as to seeing the ball. What a huge difference. You can actually see the variation in the color of the green which gives you an idea of those subtle breaks. These glasses are really good. I would also consider Tifosi sunglasses. They are also pretty good. I have one pair of Callaway's and one pair of Tifosi and love both of them.

I use them for running (almost every day), tennis, dog-walking, hiking, etc. I love to be outdoors and these are great because the adjust to the current light conditions. So, when I pop into a deli to buy a beverage, I don't have to remove them, the lenses adjust and turn clear. To summarize, they are:
-comfortable (no hurting around the ears!)
-lightweight
-sturdy (no wobbliness)
-good-looking (way better looking than you might expect)
-very fairly priced
-they do not fall off my head
